Asus U31SD Review

Asus has rolled out U31SD, a notebook with 13.3 inch HD display that comes with second generation Core i3 2310M or Core i5 2410M processor. You can configure it with 750GB / 640GB / 500GB / 500GB + 4GB SSD combo or 320GB hard disk drive and up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM.

If you get it with Core i3 2310M, you will to settle with the integrated Intel HD 3000 graphics. However, getting the Core i5 2410M model will get you Nvidia 520M GPU (with 1GB video memory) which promises top notch graphics and gaming performance.

Asus U31SD comes with either 5600mAh 83Whr (8 cell) or 4400mAh 47Whr (6 cell) battery. Oh, and it weighs much less than the gigantic Asus G73SW (10 pounds!) that we reviewed just few days back – just 1.78 kilo grams with the 6 cell battery. Other specs include 3x USB 2.0 ports, VGA, LAN, HDMI, headphone and microphone jack.

What does it mean “500GB + 4GB SSD combo?” Where does this ssd go? Is this a 4gb flash drive or something? I don’t understand.
Also, does anyone know if this new notebook is sata III compatible? As in, will it run at full sata 6.0gbps speeds? It would be great to throw in a crucial c300 and get the full sata III speeds.

I believe that SSD will be soldered on the motherboard, just like what Asus did on the Asus Eee PC 900 (2 SSDs :: 12GB + 4GB)

I believe the Hard Drive is Seagate’s Hybrid 500GB drive with 4GB SSD on board. It looks at the files loaded most often and stores them in the 4GB SSD. Almost as fast as a pure SSD. I’m running two in RAID0 on an ASUS G51.

I’d also like to know about USB 3.0 support, most Sandy Bridge Laptops support it.
